About Richard & Reflexology
After qualifying, to further his experience and to give back to the local
community Richard worked as a volunteer reflexologist in St. Josephs Hospice
in Bethnal Green, East London for about a year. When he moved back to
Basildon, he worked in St Luke’s hospice for over two years as a volunteer
using his reflexology skills to help staff, carers and patients. Richard
finds reflexology helpful and rewarding, witnessing peoples physical and
emotional difficulties eased during and after treatments.
Reflexology is a complementary therapy that involves the application of
pressure to specific points, known as reflexes, on the feet to encourage the
body to heal from within. The therapy is based on the principle that the
feet contain 'mini-maps' of the whole body and that by applying pressure
using the fingers or thumbs a reflexologist can have a positive effect on
the corresponding parts of the body.
A Brief Insight into Reflexology
Reflexology works on the theory that there are reflexes in the
feet relative to each and every organ function and part of the human body.
Rediscovered in the early part of the 19th Century, reflexology was used to
relieve pain during operations. Over the years reflexology has been refined
and a greater understanding of its uses has resulted in the treatment you
receive today. It was originally called `Zone Therapy' because the body is
divided into 10 zones, five zones from each foot.

Reiki
Reflexology is not a massage, but a stimulating pressure therapy designed to
try and relieve everyday problems affecting your body's functions.
Many minor problems that you visit your GP with could be helped in some way
by reflexology treatments. If in doubt please
always
consult your GP. One common misconception is that this treatment could be
used to diagnose illness - however a problem in your body can be reflected
in the whole zone or in one part of your foot - this does not necessarily
mean that the sensitivity felt indicates the problem is directly related to
that area in your body and you should always consult your GP for
medical advice.
You will be asked to give some personal medical history or
background to your health, and during your treatment if you experience a
sensitivity or sharp pain at a particular point on the foot, inform the
reflexologist immediately. Whilst your feet are worked on the sensitivities
and disposition of your feet will be recorded on your own file and all
information held is strictly confidential.
It has been Richard's experience that in many cases clients will
have some sort of reaction to the treatment because complementary therapies
in general may often act as a release mechanism for pain or disease within
the mind or body, and this could result in an increase of discomfort
or magnify the problem temporarily. This is commonly called a healing crisis
and this soon passes. To help with this and as a recommendation after each
treatment "if possible" double the amount of water you would normally drink
and avoid alcohol for at least 3 days. If your GP has advised you to
restrict the amount of water you drink please inform your therapist before
the treatment. It is not unusual to want to sleep during or after your
session, do what your body tells you.
Reflexology could help to release tension, improve nerve and
blood supply, and restore balance to the body. However, if you have had a
problem for some time it will not be helped immediately, it is not a panacea
for all problems. If you have any doubts Richard will be happy to discuss
the therapy with you before you book an appointment.
Make sure you enjoy your session by wearing loose comfortable
clothing, and give yourself time for the treatment; this is something you
can't rush.
The first treatment takes about one hour. Please be on time and
allow yourself the pleasure and relaxation that reflexology gives you.
All records kept will be treated as confidential.
